Hello,

earlier this year I finally got my dream Audi. 1997 A4 1.8l 5spd manual.
Now air con is important for me as I am disabled and need cool air. Of course I was assured by previous owner that my Audi had fantastic air con, yet I am constantly pulling bits of foam and what looks like an insulation type of material out of my vents.
I have removed middle vent and put hand down in there while running and found myself tearing clumps of this out of centre dash area.
However I realise I am probably removing something that is quite necessary and may regret later.
Any air con people out there who have any idea what I am dealing with ???

That stuff is from the seals between the different peices of the air ducts under the dash. Each individual plastic section of ductwork has a thin foam seal wrapped around the inner circumference so that when you slide the peices together, they don't leak air at every joint. Its also on the back side of the flappers so that when the air doors are closed, they also seal tight. Its just open cell foam and it gets dry and brittle with age, leave the stuff alone. If its not blowing out of the duct with the fan on its fine.

But that IS the problem, its constantly coming out of the air ducts and want to know how to or whether we need to take apart vents internally and re seal...

at least now i know what it is.

I have about 3 handfuls of this stuff.
