Power Steering Fluid is quite ok. The pump, idle pulley and lots of related components were just change 3 months ago at a local Audi dealership (cost $1.4k) The Tensioner belt/timing belt/waterpump were changed a year ago or 15k miles ago (Another grand there)

Is it possible these items will fail again so soon?

The local Audi Dealer has replaced my power steering pump and the whinning noise is finally gone! Will update all again if the RPM boucne is also resolved once I pick my car up later.

Good thing it is under warranty as it cost $800 the last round!

 

Interesting.. Mine does a whining noise in 2nd and 3rd at low RPM but im sure its just the tranny, as its getting older.

 

Could be the Tranny. The thing with mine is there is couple of whinning sounds and the power steering one is masking the rest out.

It was making a sound too then moving off 1st gear to the 2nd. Once I get back the car from the dealer, I will check to see if the fix has 'magically' cured all the noise.

Just got back from the dealer and apparently the noise is still there. They have replaced the power steering pump and the noise still persisted. They claim it could be the idle pulley or something.

My timing belt, tensioner and idle pulley (together with water pump etc) has just been change 15k miles ago. Could that have failed so soon?

Appreciate some advise here. If I just purchase from ECS the timing belt, tensioner and idle pulley do I need to buy the camshalf seals also? How much would that cost in labour to replace?

I aquired that noise after getting my t-belt changed. Mech said it was the idler pully and not to worry and that it should go away. Not sure though, been going on for 3 months now. I've changed garages since then as he was overcharging me (he wanted $500 to do the thermostat at the same time as my t-belt; WTF?). The noise only shows up oncold mornings and goes away once the engine warms up. btw. When you pick up your t-belt kit, try to geta water pump with a metal impeller. dieselgeek.com has a really nice kit and the price is right. The metal pump should lastmuch longer (200k maybe?)unlike the plastic pos ones that break apart and can clog up the water lines through the block.

 

The strange thing was how the dealership arrived at the conclusion the power steering pump was going bad. The dealership said 4 out of 5 techs think it is the power steering pump and the 5th didn't think it was that but had no clue.

Wanted to charge me another 3 hours labour to diagnois ($140 per labour hr!!!!)

Will be bringing it to another place and hopefully it will help. If any one has encountered this before, please let me know.
