If that doesn't work you have Linux, Win 7, Win 8. The list goes on.

It might be smart to invest in a computer you can use for more than 3-4 years though. People replace computers like phones these days. When a new one comes out, out with the old in with the new, when the computer is perfectly fine.
My shop laptop is 6 years old and runs everything perfectly, you really don't need something fast to run a copy of xp and a some basic software. I have ETKA, ELSA, couple different versions of vagcom, BMW TIS & ETK, Mazda ETK, Volvo TIS & ETK, some tuning software, the list goes on. It's really handy to have a permanent laptop that you're not afraid of getting dirty or damaging.

I have it running on an XP machine on Oracle's VM. It's a free virtual machine. Just Google it, they have a free Mac version too. But you still need an XP license.....

foos,

I'm sure CL has plenty of cheap laptops. Anything with XP or newer will be just fine, regardless of the hardware.

If you do buy one, PM me and I'll help you tune it for max performance (no matter which OS you buy it with).

VAG-COM doesn't run on WIN 7 or later (at least the older version for my 96) software or its really painfull to setup to run on the current operating systems. Thats why I have an old HP laptop with XP on it and the only software on it is VAG-COM and an OBD program for reading codes on all my other cars.

It runs great on my Win7 SP1 laptop. The cheap eBay $5 version does anyway.

VAGCOM will run on Windows 7 and Windows 8

You just force the program to run in Compatibility mode.

If that doesn't work you just run it in a virtual machine like mtroxel has already stated.

I tried compatibility mode and everything else I've looked up on the internet, still wouldn't work. Maybe its the USB drivers for my cable, but it won't connect to the car in anything after XP.

Maybe you're not running the latest version. Ross Tech's website says VCDS is compatible up to windows 8.

"Release 12.12 works with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 (both 32-bit and 64-bit)"

Ross-Tech: VCDS: Downloads: Current Release and Manual

I am not, I'm using one of the old old ones like 3.90, or 4.09. My sons car is a 96 so I don't need anything newer.
