Default Loud Engine Noise 2000 Audi A4 1.8T

I recently noticed my engine noise was louder and more proficient (4 Cyl Turbo). My friend, who happens to be from Germany and has being driving Audi's all his life said the same thing. Now I know this typically has something to do with the exhaust muffler and tailpipe system. When i got down underneath the car the louder more thunderous engine sound wasnt really coming from the muffler area, more like engine underbody/transmission area, not sure what that means. Just looking for any insight into the subject. THanks

Could be your fan belt if its in the engine area, thats what is wrong with my a4. take it somewhere just to have it looked at or it could become a big problem...

+1... just beacause its not coming from the muffler area doesnt mean you dont have a leak further up the piping. Id start by gettin the car off the ground and do a cold start so you dont burn your hands trying to find it if its not that obvious. The flex pipe is a common troublemaker.

it is the flex mesh on the exhuast. I have had this problem on both my 97 b5's sounds liek you have a chevy 454 in the audi but it a cheap fix around $60.oo

just cause its an exhaust leak doesnt mean it has to be coming from the flex pipe...
have you had any work done on it recently? new cats, pipes, etc? right before i bought my audi the previous owner had the cats replaced, and the dumbshit shop who installed forgot a couple bolts, thus creating an exhaust leak at the cat. youre most likely dealing with a leak- its just a matter of where.

The only work thats been done has been an oil change about 2 months ago, new foglights, and a new door handle. Previous to that my dad had one of the belts, a tie-rod, and a strut fixed on the car about 1-2 years ago. The loud noise I started noticing started about 1-2 months ago.
