Default Looking at a used A4 tomorrow... need insight

Hi all, just joined this forum.

I'm gonna go look at an A4 tomorrow, and would appreciate your input.

I already read the FAQ, and the newbie guide, and researched the car on the net.

The one I'm looking at is a high-mileage 98 (200k miles).

This is for my gf, the A4 has always been her dream car, and now the lease on her Mazda 3 is over, she took it back, and is currently driving my E36 M3 but she doesn't like it (she's too short, she has trouble pressing the clutch all the way when shifting ), and I don't want her driving around in my other car.

Her b-day is coming up, that would be my gift to her.

I'm mechanically inclined and perform all maintenance and most mods on all of my cars.

Here goes :

1998
2.8 V6 30v
Quattro
Manual
Silver
Leather
Sunroof
New battery
New discs and pads all around
New tires
New windshield
Recent oil change
No rust (a rarity here, I'm in Canada)

The guy wants 3900$CAN for it, he's overpriced (although there is a bunch of new stuff on it), I can probably work that down by 750$ or so.

Here's a link to the ad. http://www.lespac.com/d-vehicules-au...LPCaZZ22238540

What say you?

Yeah, looks like it's been taken care of. There are also some modifications that I can see such as the painted lowers, eyelids, painted interior, and painted engine bay.

Looks pretty good for the year.

Yeah, well, sadly, in my price range, they pretty much all have that mileage (which is obviously highway miles, so it's not too bad), or they're 1.8t, and I'd prefer a 2.8.

What's the part of the interior that you say has been painted?

The eyelids have got to go, tho...

Oh, and it looks like it's got a tape deck, not a CD player. Is it a big job to change this? (note to self : use the search function, n00b).

Well, it wasn't quite what I expected.

The exterior was super nice, but it drove... I dunno, weird.

Great ride, the suspension was tight as hell (impressive), no rattles AT ALL (unreal), but something was off.

I didn't expect like a rocket, but man, I sure never felt the 190 hp. It was a lot more sluggish than my gf's Mazda 3 GT with its 150ish hp.

The wood trim that got painted silver looked awful, and what I thought was the smell of burnt clutch (due to some accidental slippage from yours truly) was actually a seized rear caliper; we got back from the road test with the left rear wheel puffing smoke.

So it's safe to say that it's a no-no.

Oh well.

There is another one I'm looking at :

2000 1.8t
Manual
Quattro
142k miles
Timing belts changed at 60k and 120k miles
Synth oil since the beginning of its life.
One owner (well, two : a man and his sister in law before that, so it's only been in one family)
Asking price is 4 000$ tho, and I have to buy summer tires, it's on winter tires right now, plus it's 4.5 hours away.

Yeah well with 320k kms on it I think something bad was to be expected lol. That 1.8T seems interesting, plus I would tell you to get a 1.8T over a 2.8 anyways...Much more possibilities to mod it. Btw where you from in quebec? I'm from the south shore of MTL.

I'm in Quebec City.

No plans for any mods of any kind. I mod my cars, but I will not mod hers (aside from whatever might make it more esthetic or something). She's not into that anyway.

I already have an E36 M3 and a modded Legacy GT wagon, so my mod budget is stretched to the max as it is...

That other car is near Gatineau, no way I'm doing a + or - 10 hours roundtrip to see a car I'm not sure I'm gonna buy.

I saw a nice Legacy GT, a 2000, near my place, I might check it out.
