All it takes is a chip on the 1.8T to brighten your day.

I think its rather foolish to limit yourself to facelift models for an extra 20 crank horsepower, not even wheel horsepower.

If you really don't ever want to do any mods to the engine, then get the 2.8 and be done.

Timing belt/waterpump/thermo stat/idlers/tensioners etc (the complete job)
Valve cover gaskets, and then plugs because the oil leaked on to them
Cam seals
PVC Hoses/spider
Oil cooler
Cam chain tensioner seals
Passenger camchain tensioner (real expensive)
Coolant temp sensor
Pads and discs all around

The above was what I absolutely had to replace, and just what I remember, lol. Things I recently discovered I need to replace are:

Rear wheel bearings
Whole front control arm setup
Shocks and springs (shocks are nearly dead on non-sport)
That list is very similar(eerily similar, in fact) to what I've had replaced on my 2.8.

But while I bemoan the fact that the old girl is 11 years old now, most/all of the people who find out she's that old can't believe it. So, that's something, I guess.

When I was shopping for a car in 2003, I settled on the 2.8 because I liked the way the engine and tiptronic worked smoothly together. Plus, for the first time in my life I wanted an automatic. The 1.8 did not feel nearly as smooth.

But, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks....

I was talking to a friend of mine this weekend who has an S4, and he named pretty much those exact same things as well... suspension - tie rod ends, bushings, wheel bearings, and coil packs.

Also what i have found is that most high milliage a4's with the 5 speed is 2nd gear wants to pop out you can acutaly push it out with out the clutch being pushed in so watch out for bad transmissions also look for saggy headliners pay close attention to the heater/ac there known not to work to well and Cruise control and see if the cruise control works

Doesn't have to be an Audi to shift without the clutch.

But you do know you can shift without the clutch yeah?

If you're saying that some manuals won't stay in 2nd and will pop out, thats another thing.
