Question looking into an older A4

Hey guys! First post here, but not unfamiliar with the audi world. My dad owns a B6 2002 A4 1.8T with the 3rd pedal (taught me how to drive standard with it), and I've been working/tinkering with it for quite some time now. Here's where I stand:

Right now I own a 1998 subaru legacy gt with a slushbox and 140hp don't get me wrong, it's a reliable piece of equiptment, but 0-60 in a hair north of 10s doesn't cut it for me. I'm looking for something better. I'd love to stay in the subaru world and continue working on those cars and whatnot, but I wouldn't mind branching out. I've always admired my dad's A4, and would actually really like to pick up something similar.

When all said and done, I should have anywhere between $4-5k to spend on a car once I sell. I'm looking for something with awd, a 5-speed, and a little more pull than what I've got now. First off, is there anything that you guys would suggest besides subaru, audi, or bmw that I haven't thought of yet as far as looking for cars goes? Also, if I do find my way into a B5 or B6, what should I look out for? Anything technical that went wrong for those years, any notable issues, anything? Subaru had a run of bad headgaskets for my car's generation that cooked all the gt and outback engines, and that's why I ended up with 140hp instead of 165 because of an engine swap

I'm looking everywhere right now, just sort of putting out feelers to see what I can find. I'm open for any advice, any leads, whatever you guys want to post up. Thanks!

The FAQ sticky post is a good place to start, up at the top of the forum. It'll lay out a lot of the basics for these cars and should help you get a feel for what you're looking for and what car you should choose.

For a quick suggestion a chipped 1.8t sounds like your cup of tea...

Ah, another question: I know that for subaru, the newer gt guys with turbos are able to plug in what's called an accessport from cobb that will let them tune via new maps for the turbo, timing, and other parameters. Is there anything like that for the B5?

UPDATE: I've found a 2000 A4 with the inline 4 and five speed at 146k miles for $4600. I'm going to be home tomorrow from college, so I'll swing by and check it out. To be honest guys, I'm pretty excited about possibly getting into the audi world. From what I've heard (besides a few electrical bugs) they're pretty solid cars. If the deal goes through with my legacy, it should be an even swap of cash, and then I get to use my left foot finally

And for the B6 s4, I was doing a little bit of looking into it and decided the bi-turbo wasn't what I needed (or my brother for that matter). I think the 1.8t will be plenty for now, and if it can be tuned/modified to put down 200hp, that's fine by me haha. Plus I haven't heard too many good things about the 2.7t...anyone confirm this?
