looking to get. key fob for my 2001 a4
so my car is currently in the shop this weekend getting some much needed maintance, and while its there I started thinking how awesome it would be if I could lock it with a button! when I purchased the car it came with one key. it has a black plastic head with the metal key, obviously not the valet key, but no awesome switch blade either. My first question is did all b5 1.8t come with a remote keyfobs? If not is, is there a way to tell if mine has remote capabilities? Question number 2, if it turns out my car did indeed have a key fob,but just got lost as it traded hands, can I buy a fob off of the internet and program it myself without the original? I do have the one working normal key, just no fob. Also can I buy the fob and just use it for the remote, or do I have to also get the key part cut and programmed so I can use the remote function? I would really prefer to buy the fob and use it for now, and then get the switch blade key cut and programmed at a later date.....well at least till the fact that I dropped almost $1500 into my car blows over with my wife! Any info anyone can give will be a big help, thanks a ton!

I don't know if all B5's had remote capability but you shouldn't need to get the key cut to use a fob. Also, you would need to get the new key programmed for your car because I think 2001 is when they started using immobilizers. I wouldn't think that would be too difficult though since you already have a working key.

right i knew the key would have to be specially programmed , found out about the immobilizer when i first bought the car and the central locking system died, car would not do anything but honk!....but as far as the fob, how do i program it with just my one key? is there a diy for how to program an uncut key fob?
