Default Looking to buy an 01 need help!!

He guys im new tho this forum. Im looking at picking up a 2001 A4, auto, with 92k miles on it from my cousin. He's asking $5,000. The car has not had any major problems and hes been the only owner since he purchased it brand new.

Currently the car needs tie rods and he said it shimmys badly. Other than that he's had the timing belt and water pump replaced at 70k miles. He's done normal wear and tear maintenance to the vehicle (oil, brakes)

My question is, should I be ready to shell out more money on this car considering the mileage and if so what type of problems should I be ready for.

Currently I have a 2001 BMW 328 5 speed which I want to get rid of for 2 reasons. 1) It's rear wheel drive and I do not want to drive this in the snow since winter is arriving here in NY and 2) the ride is too rough for my wife

Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks.

well if the tie rod ends are shot, your control arms probably are too. you can get a whole kit on ebay for like 300 which isnt bad. its an easy diy, but expect to pay around 300 to have a shop do it. the only other thing that could go bad is your clutch. the 2001s are build pretty solid

Thanks. But I dont think ill have any clutch issues since its an 1.8T auto. I just read the sticky up top and it pretty much answered alot of my questions. I guess im slightly skeptical with this car because im coming from a low mileage BMW to a high mileage Audi and i've heard and read horror stories from Audi owners and I don't want to end up shelling out cash on the Audi if I do end up buying it. However I do love the design and body of the Audi.

yea for the price and miles its not bad of a deal. but there is a big problem youll experience its an automatic. for the year and mileage though seems like a really nice price especially if the timing-belt and such had been done. id say go for it if you really want an audi. and for the snow make sure its quattro not just fwd although fwd it decent compared to rwd

Yeah, if it's been maintained properly 92k is low (92k is low for the year too). I think my cam chain tensioner was replaced in the 120k range, as well as the mass air flow sensor... but nothing too serious.

where in NY are you?

if maintenance was done and he didn't beat the crap out of it, i think it'd be a good buy. just want to let you know right now that the performance is no where near the 328 and the auto tranny is pretty slow. if you don't care much about performance, i'd buy it.

Im in suffolk county NY. It's been female driven most of the time so I know for a fact it hasnt been beaten on. It's an auto so I don't know how the auto trannys fair on these. Am I going to be looking at replacing the tranny any time soon? And I thought the 1.8T was a quattro?? Im confused. Im pretty sure its AWD.

Performance wise I checked out teh specs on both and the Audi is slightly less in HP (like 10 HP) and also slightly less in torgue than the BMW. Im sure with a few small mods (chip) I can bring the performance up to par with the BMW. Im not too crazy about modding the Audi.

there are FWD and QUATTRO versions on both 1.8t and 2.8, just look for the quattro badge. if the car is debadged then there should still be a quattro badge above the glove box inside of the car go quattro or go home heheheh
