Umm in not a hundred percent sure if that would work..
the keys for 2000 and up have to be programmed to an imobilizer and your car does have an imobilizer, its too old... i mean its kind of like using the a/c control unit in a 2001 in your car it wouldnt work because they are different and the coding on them are different so for example the defrosters wont work.. so on...
it would just be cheaper and easier to get that regular master key for your car for $30

Sorry but that wouldn't work. The 2001 year was after the b5 facelift obviously and yours wasnt. That not only means it has a different type of key, but also the door locks are for different handle styles, and it has an immobilizer (yours doesn't) if I were you I would call some more dealers to see if you can find a cheaper one...
