Default Key Issue

Hi all,

With my recently bought A4 I only have 1 key.
I do have the plastic label with the code as well though

It is a traditional key (so no folding type) but with a 2 button keyfob.
It looks Original, as the inside says it is a VDO one.
The key came without batteries.

Now the key is working normaly, if I do everything manually.
IE opening the doors and starting the car.
But no remote, as the key has no batteries.

Now I took it to a local alarm installer who experimented with 1 as well as 2 batteries in the fob, but the remote part just did not work.

So, is the chip / electronic part simply broken?
What battery type do I need and how many of them in this keyfob?
Do I need a certain method to reprogram the key?
How do I know if this key is working or not (the electronic part)
Can I replace this key for a folding type one ab\nd make it work with my car?

Luke

Check your owner's manual. It should tell you how to reprogram it.

Manual doesn't tell you how to reprogram the key.

First go to just about any auto parts store. They'll have a thing on the counter you just point your key at and it will tell you if it gets a signal. If you pass that test, try to reprogram as follows. But before you can do this you have to at least have a second copy of the key.

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

Procedure

1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.
3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn will sound once.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.

NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except on the first press, you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
different remote.
For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice with
a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.

5. Switch Ignition OFF.
6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.
7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes.
8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
control.

Remote Control Erasing (1997 ON)

Procedure

1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.
3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals.
A short horn will sound.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory
erase.
5. Switch ignition OFF, all remotes are now erased.

`Tnks MTROXEL,

Very usefull info.
Will get things going this week, if I can find a reliable alarm specialist here that is
With regards to that second key, can that be a normal key ? (ie key without transponder? )

Btw, looks your car is very similar to mine, allthough I don't have a quatro. You have the ACK engine? (V6 - 30 valve - 193 Hp)

regards

Well, I would say no as there is no immobilizer system on US spec B5's. You can just go have one made just so you have one to turn the lock after you get out of the car. But since you asked this:

I'm thinking this isn't a US spec A4 as we never got the ACK here. I think it's very similar, just a European version. What I don't know is if there were no imobilizers on Euro spec A4s.

...............
Mine does.

IMHO, the best way to do it, is to use VCDS. That way you can change and control what the buttons on the FOB do (I reprogrammed mine to roll the windows up and down, one touch lock & unlock all doors +trunk and to lock & unlock the doors at certain speeds).

There are a lot of things you can do with the CLS that a lot of people don't know about.........and it's all free.....at your house.

A4turboguy,

First of all, My manual does not say anytging about programming the keyfob, not even about how to changes the the battery(s)
It all stops by saying: consult your local dealer to get it done.

As far as the VAG Com is concerned.....
I tend to agree with you, but the car is only in my posession for about 3 weeks now, so I did not had time yet to get the VAG Com software.

So for the time being I have to improvise and follow the directions mtroxel gave me.
Those were rather complete though I guess...thanks for that mtroxel

regards

Luke

Btw.... mine has all the functions as stated by A4trboguy, only on the actual key in the doorlock.

I wasn't trying to prove you wrong about what your manual says. I just told you what mine says.

As for programming, I can help you incorporate all of those features into your FOB for free, but you seem to be happy, so enjoy.

@ A4turboguy

If I were completely happy I wouldn't be posting here would I?

I just said that, The functions you seem to be having in your keyfob are the same as how my key functions manualy. But then again one cannot compare one with the other.

My main objective right now is to get a key with a working (lock and unlocking) remote control.
The rest of the functions will come after that.

They come at the same time. That was my point in the first place.
