K04 & chipped n00b..
I own a 99.5 A4 1.8TQ Auto and found out my turbo is done for. So i figured I'd just upgrade to the K04 since I found a new one for 400 on volkswaparts.com. Prior to all this I planned on chipping though Speedtuning, but now I hear if I wanna upgrade to K04 I should buy GIAC. I'm just confused with these "files" and such. I just want to simply upgrade the turbo and chip the ECU as well. What are my options?

do you want the best option or the cheapest option? I believe the best option is GIAC with the k04 because it is a nice aggressive file and if you upgrade to a 3 bar fpr, get bigger injectors, fmic, and different maf housing later you can upgrade to the pc-16 file and max out the turbo for it.
speedtuning is the cheapest route. APR is also an ok option. its kind of what you want to do.

You can run a direct-fit K04 with the stock tuning until you figure out exactly what you want to do. What are the specs of the K04? What is it off of? Used or new?
If you want to get the full potential, you'll be needing injectors, FPR, FMIC, and the GIAC hammer file. An upgraded clutch is recommended. Ultimately, this setup will give you up to about 230-240 hp, but it's a lot of coin for not a huge gain. What's nice about it is that you can do it in parts. Slap on the K04 and chip it with a regular K04 or even just a K03/K03s file. When you get the money for the FMIC, injectors, and FPR, you can upgrade to the hammer file for a couple hundred bucks more if you originally went with GIAC.
EDIT: essentially, I just agreed with A4speed.
If you want the most economical route, just put the K04 on. When you have the money, get a regular K04 file.
If you have the money now, skip the K04 and go with a GTRS or GT2871r elim setup from Mike at DTHaus.
