Default Just Had clutch done - banging on gear engagement

Hi All,

Just had a new clutch fitted on 1998 A4 Quattro 2.8

Clutch feels a little stiffer no big problem with that but it seems a lot harsher on gear engagement. When I come off the clutch at the bitting point there is a banging noise instead of a smoother coming together. This is especially bad when I put the gear in reverse (first is also bad though not quite as harsh) and come off the clutch. I'm wondering if it could be an engine mount or something wrong with the garage repair?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Did they replace the dual mass flywheel with a cheaper solid replacement? If so, you'd notice a difference like that, esp in 1st & reverse.

Thanks for the reply. I wondered if it may be a DMF but my car doesn't have one (1998). I've been told it could be loose drive shaft bolts? Taking it back to the garage for the third time now

My Bentley leads me to believe all 98's had dual mass. In fact I believe all B5's with a manual have DMF. That sort of change would get you the symptoms you have. But, there might be something else going on there too.
