Default It's all in the timing...

Multiple sources on the interwebs say that is a good idea to replace the timing belt, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, and accessory pulleys if there is any question about the existing components' vitality.

I just bought a used 2001 A4 1.8t, with no knowledge of the cars maint' history.

Question is as follows:

What should I replace, where should I buy, and where can I find a good how-to guide?

Timing belt DIY http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng35.shtml
buy at ecstuning.com,dealership, tuning shop etc.
accessory pulleys don't need to be changed but the belts should be. your 01 1.8t has an internal waterpump, and your thermostat is in a different location. so the diy that i showed you will be different than what your engine is like. but 90% of the steps are correct.
heres a good diy site http://www.audidiy.com/b5a4.html

Read the faq sticky at the top of the main page.

Your 01 AWM engine has the updated tensioner design, but should still be replaced every 80k ish timing belt change. The original tensioner on AEB engines would sometimes fail before 70k miles which is where the bad timing belt reputation comes from.

Blauparts has a nice kit w/waterpump and more. So does ECS tuning.

Awesome, thanks for the advice! It seems that ECS tuning's website is a bit easier to navigate through and offers more parts than Blauparts.

So if my VIN# is WAU... D41A096792, do I have a "late model year" 2001 B5?

Because if so, I need this kit, apparently: http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-...ES1344/ES1344/

I'm about to order mine from blauparts myself because you can rent the tools from them as well, and I think it was a bit cheaper for a more complete kit (at least for my AEB engine). I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous, I've never gotten this in depth with any car I've ever owned.
