You may want to take a closer look at your turbo oil lines. What year is your car?

My 98.5 had a turbo die at 85K. The oil lines on the older versions are smaller and coke up easier if you do not allow for proper cool down procedures. When the oil line gets coke and constricted enough, it starves the turbo of oil, which in turn causes extreme heat build up when you drive your car hard.

This can cause slight ruptures in the oil line and you may be leaking oil around there. Its a very common problem with the older cars - though it doen not always kill a turbo.

If your turbo was dying you would know it. First sign would be a lot of white smoke blowing out of your exhaust when you start the car up cold. Eventually your turbo will start to whistle like a siren, and it will keep getting louder as it gets worse. Then you'll lose boost and eventually the car will go into limp mode.<edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>37945.389849537</editDate></edited>

<FONT size=2>Its a 97 with 85K maybe thats just when they go? I believe the oil lines are flexible right you think id be able todiconect one side and look?</FONT></P>

<FONT size=2>I used this engine flush stuff on my other car, basically you put it in your crank case and idle for 5 minutes and then rev up 2K RPM for 2 mins or sumthin. would that stuff be safe for a turbo car I dont think it said anything on the bottle about turbos but the stuff was really light id think the turbo would just cook it. </FONT></P>

<FONT size=2>What kind of whistle do you mean I have a high pitch sound kind of like a bearing wurthats not too loud but it sounds more like the idler arm or water pump or something</FONT></P>

Turbo's don't normally die at 85K. Avg lifespan is more than that - maybe 150K. But when they do go its usually blamed on the constricted oil lines on our older models.

Than engine flush was fine. Should not have hurt you at all - but it didn nothing to help any coked lines.

if the whine gets loud enough so that you KNOW it doesnt belong there then you should be concerned. You will know when it doesnt belong there. Turbo whine is normal, but when it gets loud enough that you are embarrassed about it then thats what I am talkin about. It will get higher pitched as you increase revs.

Just curious - have you changed your timing belt yet? With 85 K I would do it now if you haven't. The sound you are describing to me sounds like it could be an old TB tensioner squealing.<edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>37946.0647800926</editDate></edited>

If they did not replace the tensioner (or if an independent shop did it) you should get that looked at as soon as possible because it means you still have the old style tensioner in your car. Independant shops might not have up to date info and may have even replaced your old style with another old style. Thats what happened to me and the new (old style) tensioner they installed broke about 20K later.

I caught it in time before the belt slipped/shredded and changed the tensioner and belt again (by myself this time).

Here's a link to an AW post I made about the two styles... You can see the first one has a ball socket that the roller arm ball fits into - well the socket stretches or breaks over time and the ball joint separates, removing all the tension on the belt. The new style is just a push rod that pushes on the flat bend in the roller arm.

My car has 108K on it now - still very healthy. One control arm starting to squeak, but I will wait until the spring to change it (gonna buy all eight of them from ECS and do them all at once).

ECS has all 8 front control arms for like 450 bucks or something. www.ecstuning.com Pretty much the best prices for Audi OEM stuff.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy control arms used.

<FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" color=blue size=3>This is a little update:</FONT></P>

<FONT color=#0000ff size=3>changed my oil yesterday and decided to take some of my intake hoses off and see if there was anymore oil in there I had cleaned them when I had them off before, everything looks good no oil in the one that goes to the Throtlebody so looks like its not leaking anymore.</FONT></P>

<FONT color=#0000ff size=3>Unless of course its just collecting in the one that comes off the turbo and is just tuning to jelly</FONT></P>
