Needle Nose pliers pulled mine out, or take the vent out...

 

Did you just pull?

 

Those 3 vents (with the holder) slides off the dashboard easily. It will be a little tough to pull when you do it for the first time (since the glue and such will still be sticky) but just try to do it a little harder.

There will be a cable behind the vent piece. You could disconnect it but I don't see why you need to just to fix this problem.

 

I had this same problem when I bought mine. I pulled out the vents and put the dampening material in its place and vioala!! no more annoying cloth sticking out. I used my bare hands cause as it was said already, it pulls right out. Its just put in there very well, a common VW/audi trait for their interiors, just dont cut nothing....there's a reason why its there!!!
