Default Ignition control module location

I am experiencing issues with my coils not getting any spark, and through all the other problems, the next thing in line is to replace the ignition control module. I know that usually go on top of the air box on the passenger side, but instead I see a thin metal plate where it is SUPPOSED to go. I don't see unpaired connectors anywhere that could go to either side and I was wondering if there was another location I could look. Thanks for the help.

I have a 2001 1.8t quattro automatic

You don't have one, they were only on AEB engines. Your engine is ATW.

Any chance you can scan your car for engine fault codes?

It's OBD2, yes? I will try to get my hands on one. There is an oreilly right around the corner from where I live and I know some of the guys pretty well. May be able to borrow it to get some codes. or if there is another way I'll figure it out.

Yep, all cars starting in '96 use OBDII.

Ok, new question before I get the codes scanned. Would it be cheaper to buy a OBDII to usb cord that I found online for $14.00, or pay the $50 and just buy one from autozone or something. The only reason I ask is because I know i need a program once I plug the car to my computer and I dont know how much that may cost if its not free.
