Default How to tell if I ave a newer engine and transmission.

I recently bought a 96 Audi a4 quattro with 250k miles but supposedly on 120k on the engine and transmission. Is there any way to prove it? I got a great deal on it either way and the car is in excellent condition.

Not really. But you can check the engine out and make sure it is sound.

There's no way to tell the exact mileage on mechanical parts like that. 4 cyl engine or 6? Manual trans or auto? Checking the engine and transmission codes is a good way to get a rough estimate of what year car they originally came from.

It's a 2.8 with a standard transmission. How do I check the codes?

A 96 A4 with a V6 motor SHOULD be the 12v AFC. The letters "AFC" will be stamped on one of the cylinder heads underneath the plastic engine covers. The trans code should be 01A. That will be on the side (I forget which off the top of my head) of the transmission roughly underneath where your seat is.

01a covers all of them. They also have letter codes to distinguish one from another...

If you gave me your vin number I can't tell you the exact engine number you'd have in your car but I can tell you the range of numbers used in a certain production date range.

You have an early 95. Production date Oct 5th, 95. If the engine in your car is within this range from engine numbers AFC024096 to AFC026517 produced from Aug 31, 1995 to Oct 31, 1995 then it's original, or if a transplant it's from the correct engine number range for the production date of your car. Take a look at the number on your engine. If it's different than that range I provided I can tell you what it came out of.
