I've seen used seats for our cars in good condition on Craigslist. You may have to wait awhile before one pops up, but they do. I looked into getting mine reupholstered, and I received an estimate of $250, but that was only for the side portion. Since then the main portion of my seat has opened up also, so $500 sounds reasonable to me.
