Default Gritty / sandy oil?!? 1999 A4 B5

Hi guys, i bought an A4 B5 1999 avant quattro manual, and the first thing before giving the guy the money, the oil cap was taken off so i could check the oil and when i did so i noticed it was quite gritty and coarse, what is this?? what could it possibly be?? please dont guess, would like someone with knowledge or experience of this under their belt,
cheers a heap!
(mind you, this car made the drive home over 900km's away from sydney to gold coast in one solid day trip so it clearly drove fine)

Took the filler cap off to check the oil? Why not use the dipstick which is actually down in the oil instead? If you are talking about the residue which may be on the underside of the cap, that isn't so unusual.
