I don't remember. you're using the instructions only for a b5 a4 right? in the b&m instructions, it covers a bunch of different cars. I didn't realize that at first.. I thought everything was pretty clear after that. what step are you on?

In step 35 it looks like the lip is outside and in 36 it looks to be inside... I feel like inside would be best because aluminum will be destroyed by steel but that will be hard.

are you talking about the part labeled p? the bushings go directly into the hole on the silver piece with the lips on the outside and then the blue piece slides over them like the pictures

I'm having serious issues with these polymer inserts. I feel stupid, but they will not go in!

lol did you get them in? you have to use a lot of force to push them in flush. use a vice if you have one

edit: good job and good luck with those

Use a vice for the rail bushings? lol thanks for the good luck! I'm bringing out the pliers tomorrow afternoon. If that doesn't work then I'm going to run to my parents place and use the vice!
Currently trying to put the clip on with the rail out

no the vice comment was for the bushings. I posted that before I read that you successfully got them in. not sure how a vice would help with those now

lol now i'm confused.

I got the small little |= shaped ones into the silver rod. I had been trying to put them into the blue linkage connector. They went into the rod without problem.

Now I'm working on the plastic bushings for the gold colored rails on either side of the shifter. They are proving to be very tough, so tough that I may just stick with the stock rubber ones unless someone tells me the plastic are worth it. I keep bending the C clip and the plastic is getting torn and beat up. Ugh.
