FWD to AWD

FWD to AWD
Hypothetically what would be involved in turning a fwd A4 into Quattro? I mean you'd need a deferent transmision, drive shaft and a new rear axel assembly etc. what else and how hard would it be?

The whole rear end is different. Gas tank, fuel lines, suspension, hubs, exhaust. The rear of the chasis is designed so that you wouldn't be able to swap. In other words, it's impossible. Well I guess anything is possible, but you're talking major reconstruction.

^ lol. Like Jason said- given enough time and money, anything is posisble. What you're talkin about here is return on investment. You gotta figure with the parts, labor, and effort that you're gonna have to put into this to pull it off, it would be much less time consuming, and more cost effective to just sell what you've got and buy a quattro.
Other thing I was thinking is this: in order to get all the quattro parts needed for the swap, you'd have to get your hands on an A4 in reasonably good shape, that already has quattro. If you're going to spend the money to buy one of those, why not buy one that runs and call it a day?

^haha yeah i know what you mean
and i figured it would be pretty complicated... me and my friend were talking about it last night though and i wanted to see what you guys thought. i wonder if you could make an A4 rwd? i think i saw a thread about that somewhere...

Again i think it just comes down to how much time and money you're willing to invest. Like the FWD/AWD swap, if you're doing it just to be able to say that you've done it thats one thing, but if you're doing it because you want an AWD (or RWD) car, just sell the thing and buy somethin else

are you asking cause your a4 is fwd? or just some random topic u got into an argument with your friend... i only ask cause i didnt think that the 2.8 came in fwd

^^^ The 2,8 12 / 30V both came in FWD, at least they did in the UK.
Converting a B5 A4 FWD to quattro would be time consuming, wallet depleting, and almost pointless.
A lot of welding and fabricating's involved, or grafting in a B5 quattro mid-to-rear section, not a project I'd relish.
A B6 / B7, yes, as both FWD and quattro share the same bodyshell, FWD models run a rear subframe with the same pick-up points as the quattro version.
The conversion would be bolt-in at least, but even then, unless you had a wrecked donor B6 / B7 quattro with all parts to transfer over, I personally wouldn't bother.

yes my 2.8 is fwd. and if i was going to get a quattro id actually just go out and buy one. but me and my friend were just talking about it and we were wonding if it would actually be a doable thing.. but looks like its not really. we were also wondering how we could make his prelude awd or rwd haha
