front differential drain plug
1999 a4 quatro 1.8T
I'm trying to change the front diff oil on my automatic 5 speed and I can't find the drain plug. I found the fill/check plug but the drain plug is nowhere to be found. the haynes manual I'm using only shows the fill/check plug for the front. got any pictures? Is it just one of the housing bolts?

Sounds like too much work but if you don't see the drain plug in the bottom center of the front diff then you are in for some fun--the fill/check plug is the drain plug. On some older and most of the new models you actually "drain" by siphoning. Hope this helps.

The final drive is part of the transmission.

Sorry it is a bit confusiing but the transmission and the front differential run off the transmission fluid G052162A2. The final drive (where the front of the prop shaft is inserted) and the rear differential take the same fluid G052145S2 (can use gear oil if you have to) but be careful what fluid you are putting where--can cause big time future issue.

I know. I think Loree is getting final drive and center diff (torsen) mixed up. The center diff has its own housing that bolts to the tail end of the transmission housing. The prop shaft goes up into the center diff which then sends power to the front diff.
I guess the automatic transmissions the fluid in the transmission and the center dont mix like they do on the manual transmissions.
