and (8-10 thousandths) is read .008-.0010" (10 thousandths = 1 hundredth)


now im not 100% on this, but i doubt 1/100th of an inch or less would matter, the fingers on the pressure plate would flex enough to pick up the difference. if 1/100th of an inch mattered that much, then how can you wear off 1/4" of clutch material and still drive on it?

however i was told that resurfacing the stock flywheel was a bad idea, auditech97 said that and although couldnt explain the exact reason- i would trust him over myself as he works on these cars all day long. i will do a bit more research before i have mine resurfaced.

although my local garage where i get alot of work done, and a few people on the forums have said that resurfacing is ok when you have it done on the right equipment, so im really unsure as to which is the right answer.

 

also go back to him, slap him, and explain this is a german car, use friggen milimeters. stupid SAE... america always has to be different.

i think normally .003-.005" (or 3 one thousandths to 5 one thousandths) is taken off

so what i want to know is if what he took off was enough to make it so i would need a shim

 

Nah. He is just confusing you. He should have never mentioned the word "shim." Max of .010 is not enough to worry about in my opinion.

i probly wont even worry about it. onepoint8 and ghost you guys are probly right i just wanted to see what you guys thought because i really dont feel like getting it finally all together just to mess something up and have to do it all over again.

 

Know what you mean! I just got done bolting my tranny back up to the engine about 15 mins. ago. Not something I want to do again in the near future, at least by myself.

 

Only thing he changed by resurfacing the top surface of the flywheel is where the clutch will engage with the clutch pedal and how much pre-load will be on the pressure plate when it is installed. Putting a shim on the back of the flywheel is going to do nothing at all unless he cut the surface area where the crank sits against the flywheel.

There is nothing wrong with resurfacing our DM flywheels, people have been doing it for years and I had mine done 3 times before I couldn't use it any more.


What do you expect a "audi dealer tech" to tell you? He is going to tell you what he has been told to say and this is because Audi is going to make more money selling you a flywheel vs charging you to resurface the flywheel.
