i got my flywheel resurfaced and the person who did it said he took 8-10,000ths inch. he told me i might want to get a shim to go between the engine and the flywheel to make up for it but the audi dealership doesnt have any shims for the manual transmission and i havent been able to find one anywhere else. so does anyone no where i could get one and how bad would it be to put the flywheel back in without one?

If your number is correct, you're talking about a seriously thin shim. He said he took off .0008". As a reference a human hair is around .003".

 

well he told me it was 8-10 that he took off and he made it seem like it was kind of alot so i just wanted to make sure. ive never had a flywheel resurfaced before but i know its usually only a few thousandths thats taken off

 

Maybe he meant .008-.010". Which is quite a bit.

What I wrote in my last post would be read as 8 to 10 thousandths

 

did he say 8 to 10 - 1000ths (0.008-0.010")

or 8 - 10,000ths (0.0008")

I don't understand the theory for needing a shim. Maybe he is worried that the input shaft will be too close to or touching the crank with the lost surface area on the fw... Idk... Your engine should already have a shim on it. Adding anothing one might cause the bolts/case to bind when tourquing the engine/tranny together, i would think. Idk, i'd say don't worry about it. This is one of the reasons I didn't get mine resurfaced because of all the "what if's."
