My 96 A4 q 2.8 has a weird sound at 2200 rpms and sounds just like if you roll just one window down in the back or just the sun roof and it makes a sound that hurts your ears. Even at idle it does it a bit, then if i rev it i can make it do it again around 2200 a little but while driving at 40 mph around 2200 its very anoiying and hurts the ears, if you lay into the gas it goes away...anyone have the same problem. If i push the cluch in at 40mph it goes away when the rpm drop down to idle.

Maybe an exhaust leak? Get under the car and listen if you can.

 

no leaks, it sounds like a drone sound, i have a twin engine boat and it does it when the two engines are are excectly the same rpm, and also if two streetbikes are riding next to eachother it will make the same type of sound...Its gets to you if your cruising back roads, i'd put an aftermarket exhaust on but i dont want it anymore loud.
