Default Engine mounts

After someone on this forum advised me that the way to check if you have busted engine mounts is to drive the car or have a friend drive it and see how much the engine moves.

Well today I went to an empty car-park and lifted the hood and drove whilst i peeped through windshield looking at the engine. When Changing the Gears from PARK to DRIVE or NEUTRAL TO DRIVE. There looks to me like an unusual amount of engine movement. When accelerating there is also a good amount of movement from front to back.

Basically Im trying to diagnose and repair a cabin vibration problem but before I can attempt to change the 2 engine mounts myself, i would love some advise and opinions guys.

Fore-aft engine rock, where the back of the engine appears to drop when you go into gear and raise when you put it into neutral/park, is indicative of a worn snub mount. That's a small piece on the lower front of the engine which plugs into a receiver on the radiator core support. See the thread posted recently by CCA4 for some pics and a lot of info.

I agree with the devil the snub mount is a good place to start and it's about 10 bucks and and 1.5 to 2 hours labor

If you like performance driving then spend more and get a good poly one... 034 Motorsport.

There have been several owners of A4s with automatics who said that the urethane snub mounts transmit a lot of vibration through the car when stopped in Drive (at a light for instance). Just something to keep in mind when choosing one.

Mine does. I don't care. Better than having a sloppy engine. Those mounts allow waaaaaay too much slop stock.

I hear ya - I only wanted to throw that out there because different people have different levels of tolerance for things like that.

it took me 1/2 hour actually. The old snub looked ok though it was compressed to an oval shape.
