the most caustic thing I use is simple green, engine degreaser isn't really the correct forum of cleaner, since it's mostly designed to remove old oil deposites and well.. grease. Not brake dust. As before mentioned Wheel cleaner is best.. but I found that simple green works better, espically on tired OEM alloys.

don't use engine degreaser on your wheels lol. it'll strip the clear coating. just use wheel cleaner. i used carb cleaner on mine last week and it seems to be fine. my wheels are all rashed up anyways so i don't care about them lol

At most use break cleaner if something is really on. i worked at a euro shop for a while and had to wash all the cars after wards and the guy told me if you have sap and other **** on the car you can use break cleaner and it wont mess anything up. it works amazingly too.

Brake cleaner is kind of abrasive. I would avoid it's use on "pretty" or painted parts. Plus, it leaves a film when it dries. Sap on paint can be removed with a clay bar. Simple green is good stuff for brake dust or really dirty paint, but cut it with water.

yeah the only time i used it was when i was cleaning cars so i immediatly (god i cant spell tonight) washed it of. i was told never to use carb cleaner on pain because it will take it off, is that correct?

and PS the place i worked at was German Car Specialists in Bellevue, WAand the owner was a F*CKING PIECE OF $HIT, the techs there are amazing though.

carb cleaner is for carbs and built-up carbon. why would you ever use it on a painted surface?
