Mike, was out toying with it and noticed one thing I didn't before.
Remember how I said I can shift 1-4 without clutching? Well, 4th is tough to get into, and the rpms drop. If I clutch it goes in normally, and if i release the clutch, the rpms drop but the car doesnt move.
Kind of odd that it can effect rpms, but not work still...don't see how a gear is dead but still partially catching. Meh, doesn't matter.
going to pick up a used trans from car-part and buy a clutch kit from ecs (may as well while I'm in there, plus I did smoke the clutch doing the 5th gear start to get her home)

possible linkage issue. sounds like the shifter wants to go into 4th with the syncro trying to do its job, which tells me the other three may still be there. like a fork was broken and now won't engage into the first four.

Thanks Andrew!
And yeah I have considered linkage issue too, the only reason I'm not sure on it is the vibration before the free rev, I mean it would make more sense than me randomly losing 1-4 gears.
Could I still have 5 and R if the fork broke?
Also, the fact that I was already IN a gear when it free revved bothers me. Since the shift fork shouldn't even be in play at that time, right?

Gotcha, I was under the impression that there were 3 shift forks 1-2, 3-4, 5-R
Well, I'm finding used transmissions with 70k on them for around 300, I may as well replace the entire transmission rather than rebuild it, since mine has 170k.

Rebuilding one will set you back nearly the cost of a brand new one from the dealer. Just the labor alone will be over $300 during a rebuild.
