if you have or plan on running a 2871 elim, you dont really need rods. It just doesnt spool fast enough or make the same kind of tq

Contrary to popular belief, it is not just the torque that kills the rods, I have files that make well in excess of 500 puonds of torque and have been running stock internals (GT28RS-71R Eliminator big turbo) since 2004.

Pre-ignition (detonation) is what kills the rods...

since when do elims, or ANY gt28 turbo make anything over 400ftlbs? A bad tune is a given btw. There is no way a stock 1.8t rod is going to hold that power for more than a dyno run or 2. You might want to stop filling peoples head with this kind of info and prevent them from blowing holes in there block.

If someone has already gone through the trouble & expense of attaining a 500 ft.lbs. TQ level, it really does not make sense to skip the rods (unless they are forged in the first place). Even on a spot-on tune, it is way too risky.

yeah when i put my gt28 in all im changing is rods. i was told anything over 300hp or 300lb/ft shoud replace the rods. you dont need to do that much more to it until you go BAT. taking apart the top end is not as big of a job as a whole motor build. if your doing a whole motor build theres a lot more you can change...and it would be a bit of a waist of money to rebuild the motor for a gt28. hope that helps a little.

The only gt28 series turbo that needs rods is the 2871r. The rest will be fine with a good tune and boost control. You can even run a 2871r with pump gas and stock engine also. Its when you start maxing out the turbo when you need the rods.

the rods are the only thing that will break. The rest of the stock parts have seen over 700bhp
