Default Driving with bad turbocharger?

I have the opportunity to own a 97 1.9T but the turbo needs to be replaced. The exhaust smokes I'm told. It would be my daily driver and it will take a week to get a new turbo so I can put it in. Can I still drive it in this condition until I get the new turbo? Thanks so any help! Cant wait to be an Audi owner!
