How does the ecm know what cylinders are misfiring? How long does it take for the monitors to come back on after reset?

I'll be welding in the new flex peice today, so we'll see what happens afterwards.
Damn man i didn't know you wanted a tutorial.... Ok to put it simply everything starts at TDC (top dead center) the timing marks at the cam and crank are lined up perfectly. When the engine runs the ECM uses the cam position sensor, and crank sensor to know which cylinder its on. It it detects a slight change on when the engine is supposed to fire it will register a miss-fire. A rough running engine like an intake or exhaust leak can throw the engine off balance, firing the cylinder at the wrong time and the ECM will register a miss-fire, even knowing it might not even be missing. Catch my drift?

Not really. But I'm sure I can find a detailed description on the web somewhere.

I fixed the exhaust leak, and have been driving the car for two days, and NO CODES! The car runs smoother at idle and part throttle. The leak was very small, and I didnt know about it until I got the car inspected.

Now its time to do the stupid timing belt.......

99% chance its your MAF.

Replace it... its bound to go soon anyways.

Well if for some reason the misfires come back, I agree its probably the MAF. Been three days now though and no codes.

i have the same problems now. ive changed all the air censors, fule filters now i will change the wires and different spark plugs, but most defenatly look for an exhaust leak. ive notice a weired sound coming from the exahust when i take off. any recomendations on exhaust systems i want to upgrade.

Chances are its your exhaust then. When you take off, the motor rotates in the bay, pulling on the exhaust. Thats why all front wheel drive cars have flex pipes in the exhaust.

Jack the car up and look at the flex pipes, if they are torn, thats your problem. You could also run the car and run your hand around, you'll feel a leak. The cheapest way to fix it is to buy a flex pipe from ecstuning, cut the old one out and weld the new one in. You'll probably want to buy new rear exhaust clamps too. Mine broke getting them off, and I used conventional clamps, and they didnt seal at all.

Got any more q's let me know.
