I have a 2000 a4 quattro, and I need to replace my cv axles. At the parts store, they asked if I needed 33 or 38 spline, and I had no idea. It is a 1.8 liter, standard transmission. That may make a difference. Any help would be much appreciated.

 

I just dealt with that ****. It's a huge pain it the *** (the labor is easier than finding the correct axle). The driver's side was a breeze, but the passenger side was a nightmare.

Mine is a 2001.5 1.8t 5 speed and it has 38 splines.

I think yours has 33, but I'm not sure.If you look at the outside CV axle bolt, it will give you an idea by its size. That probably doesn't help you much, but I think the 38 spline has a 22 or 23mm head and the 33 spline has less than 22 - not totally sure anymore.

I went through two 33 spline axles before I got the right one.

Check Autozone online. They were the only people who had (and listed) the correct axle. They also ship it to your home for free.

Remember: When you finally get the one you need, install the outer joint first and don't cut the zip tie on the inner until you're 100% ready to mate and bolt it up to the gear box. Otherwise you can damage it (our CVs have a weird, "loose" type of design).
