Default custom headers for 2.8

Hi guys, I have a 1998 30v 2.8 quattro and was wondering if the exhaust manifold on the 2.7 s4 will be a direct bolt on to my car. The reason im asking is becuase I noticed that there are a lot of after market headers made for the 2.7. My idea is to buy a set and have a local muffler shop cut and and bend some pipes to fit the 2.8.

I haven't seen definitive information about this, but threads a couple years ago on the topic said that they would not bolt up. I don't know for sure though - I don't remember who posted that they wouldn't work, and how knowledgeable that person was.

I tried looking into it once, the guy I talked to who was selling the headers said it would require a W12 throttle body and some other modifications to the head and that it would cost a lot more money than it'd be worth for the gain's you'd see from it. If I recall right, between the new TB and the headers themselves and custom fabbing of the pipes and the other modifications necessary, it was upwards of $1500 bucks to see maybe 10hp. Be far more worth it to take that $1500 and put it towards a PES G2 kit if you're looking for power. I'll see if I can dig through my various inboxes I was using at the time and find the exact info and post it up.

Okay, after some searching, I found that what I was talking about my "research" into was actually an RS4 intake mani, which would require a W8 throttle body. This was the response sent to me by the seller of the intake mani in regards to my asking if it was worth it or not "the amount of money you goign to spend on the manifold, then you need a W8 Throttle body, then need to run a custom intake on this, It adds up to $600 in parts, It doesn't make enough power to be worth putting this on a A4. Might want to save for a S4 Engine on your car."

That said, this could be a useful thread to your requested info: https://www.audiforums.com/forum/b5-models-69/headers-my-a4-2-8-quattro-1998-a-96539/

Best of luck in your decisions.

The exhaust manifolds will fit the 2.8 head, but those are turbo manifolds not NA headers. So it would work if you were looking to do a twin turbo setup not leave the car NA.

Using a turbo manifold for a NA is not going to give you any gains in power since the short turbo manifold are basically log manifolds not a manifold with equal length runners like you want on a NA header.

Thanks for the info. Mike.
I was thinking of buying s4 headers and having a local shop cut the ends where the turbo mounts then fabricate pipes to link up with my current exhaust.

The reason i mentioned the exhaust manifold is becuase if they fit , then the aftermarket s4 headers will fit too.

Still not going to do anything for you since you will still have a log style header with very short runners. On a NA setup you want long equal runners that all meet at 1 spot and usually under the car.

Best thing to do is to just find a V8 exhaust shop, see if they would be willing to make you custom headers right on your car.

JHM makes NA headers for the S4 V8.
