Crunchy Gears
#12
its the synchros over time they just wear out and older cars they crunch until the gearbox heats up a bit, i had the same issue and theres 2 things you can do, double clutch until the gearbox heats up (1-5 minutes) or replace teh gearbox oil with gm synchromesh to quite down the gears (30 minute drain and fill)

it cant make things worse and opening the tranny up will just confirm its the synchros. 99% of the time, when only 1 gear grinds, its the synchros. to be sure, double clutch it from first to second and see if it grinds. it shouldn't

It's a pretty common problem - happens on my car and my dad's.. worse on mine though. I tried changing the fluid and I even took it to a transmission shop - they checked it out and nothing was wrong / synchros were OK. So - that being said, I just live with it.

mine does the same thing, only when its cold and haven't warmed it up completely, after its warm and/or go through 2nd gear like twice it goes away? and don't happen again until the next day in the morning again...?
but i have read that you have to give the tranny fluid time to warm up before, it will let you shift smoothly?

I have the exact same problem. when the engine has warmed up it is fine and shifting is really smooth. In the sumer i never felt any crunchiness. I figured it was no problem and its just because the fluid is cold
