Default code 16885 implausible speed sensor signal

my spedometer has stopped working at random times and it just kind of fluctuates up and down, no matter what speed your actually going, and then it eventually just sits at 0. i have vagcom and scanned the codes and got "vehicle speed sensor: implausiable signal". now my question is where is the vehicle speed sensor located? i'm assumning its probably mounted in the tranny somewhere, but thats just a guess. i have a 2000 A4 1.8T engine. also if there is any kind of test in vagcom, can someone please give me the test number so i can run it and see what it says

Vehicle speed sender (VSS) is located on the final drive cover, just in front of the driveshaft (driver's side).

It could be the sender itself is faulty, easy replacement, or the magnetic pulse ring within the final drive is cracked, very common.

Replacement of the actual VSS is easy, and takes a couple of minutes. The magnetic pulse ring however, is more complex - requires the driveshaft removed, the oil drained, then the drive flange levered out, to allow the final drive cover to be removed.

You may also need to remove the driver's side tranny mount, to gain access to 2 of the final drive cover torx bolts.

The magnet is a simple pull-off, press-on fit.
