Default Clutch questions

Recently, my clutch has gone to the floor with no resistance on two occasions when I have tried to start my car. (97 1.8 Quattro) Once I pull it back, I can use it again. I am told it is most likely the master or the slave cylinder that causes the problem. My question: is there any way to tell for sure which cylinder it is? Thanks for any help.

You can check the slave to see if it is leaking.

could be some serious air in the line too. bleed your slave for starters to see if it helps. also, make sure your brake fluid is full, as your clutch uses the same fluid
