Default Clutch, Axle, what?

My car's original problem was what I thought to be a clutch issue. However, the other day, I looked under my car, and I saw this:

When I pull my clutch out with it in gear, I hear the clutch disc spinning. But now I've noticed that my axle is detached, so I'm thinking my differential is just hanging out there, so the car doesn't drive. Also, my speedometer has a reading when the clutch is out fully with the car in gear, the reading is higher as your progress through the gears.

Is this just a simple axle issue? If I replace the axle will everything be cool?

Thanks so much guys.

If the axle isnt attached you need to stop driving it, because youre gonna mess up the quattro. similar to having the wrong sized wheel on. You are putting a drag on one spline while the other spins freely, they wont match each other in speed.

Well, the car doesn't move, so I haven't been driving it at all. Thanks.

I'm getting the entire axle itself replaced, so I'm hoping that will dodge an issue of joints being busted.

ok you'll be fine except your pinch bolt for the upper control arms might be rusted onto the spindle. you might need to prepare to buy a spindle. just spray everything with pb for like 3 days and you'll have a leser chance of breaking stuff

If the pinch bolt is rusted in you can drill the bolt out without destroying the wheelbearing housing. Be carefull when pounding on the bolt that you do not mushroomit.I have had to do it to bothsides of my car. When you reassembleuse lots of never- sieze on the bolt and in the pinch area. Water just sits in there andrusts the bolts in solid. LPS-3 isalso good to spray on as it leaves a very tenacious coating that lasts for quite a while. B.
