Default clunking engine noise

recently changed the valve cover gasket this is a aeb engine

replaced all 4 spark plugs and icm

car has a loss of power and a loud knocking noise sounds like from the head maybe further toward the back

the engine evens out at about 2.5K 3K rpm but still low on power

Tough one...What plugs did you use? Only use NGKs.....Does the car shake when its knocking or just a spark knock as in only you can hear it?

you have two cats on a 4 cylinder???

if your cat is glowing its melted by now and that would cause an additional loss of power. im sure it was glowing because of all the fuel being dumped in it from the misfires in cyl 2 and 3. running on 2 of 4 cylinders would also be the main reason for loss of power.

a loud knocking noise sounds like from the head maybe further toward the back

the engine evens out at about 2.5K 3K rpm but still low on power
do you mean the sound goes away above 3k rpms? would you say it sounds like a diesel idling? your cam chain tensioner could be so worn that its throwing your cam timing off quite a bit and causing misfires.

anyway to check this out too see how bad the cam tensioner is worn?

at idle looks like a missfire engine is jumping arroun a bit and at low throttle it gets slightly worse for a sec but above 3K it stops the violent jumpping about

take the valve cover off and look at the tensioner. it has two plastic runners that push against the chain. if they are all tore up and there are pieces all over, or if the chain is just very loose, then its bad.

had the cover off the other day and pushed on it a bit i do beleive it was quite tight when i did

no idea on the plastic parts though

gonna pull cyclinder 2 and 3 spark plugs and try new ones

would low compression on those 2 cyclinders cause a missfire?
