Default close to getting an a4

ive been doing a lot of research and decided on either an a4 or jetta and my uncle has a 1998 2.8 a4 quattro with 80,000 miles on it that hes willing to sell to me for 6,000. Originally I wanted the 1.8 for the better gas mileage and equal hp after a chip but im realizing that for the extra 500 the gas mileage would take a lot to even out.

Basically, im wondering what people think about the price and whether I could find a 1.8 or a newer 2.8 with this low mileage for that price.

Also, the first thing that I would do to this car is projector lights with hids. I know that there have been a lot of posts about this type of thing but the with the ebay one's, when i click on the link the item is no longer available and for the other ones people say they are gonna post pictures of the light output and then never do or the picture is blank with a red X. Im wondering peoples opinions on projectors they have bought and how the light output of them is compared to cars that come with it stock now. Thanks for any input and sorry if these type of questions have already been answered

What all has he had done maintenance wise? If everythings good then the deal sounds pretty good 80k miles is nice :P the 2.8's are much more reliable then the 1.8's too and I believe 98 is the 30v which is a plus.

^ Yes. '98 is probably a 30v. Did your uncle get the timing belt changed yet? Also you can get a supercharger for the 30v, which is only thing your really looking at performance wise for mods. 6 large is a good price for 80,000 miles. Tip or manual?

Im checking in about the timing belt and im pretty sure that its the 30v since its a 98 but im checking about that as well. its a manual (I wish id be satisfied with a tip or auto, they are so much easier to find). I think the supercharger would be too expensive but im pretty content for now with 190 hp after my 150 hp acura. any recommendations for aftermarket headlights if i get it?

thanks, I just found a couple of those posts. I'm trying to decide if I should get one from a site like andys autosport or lltek or just take my chances with ebay because a few people seem satisfied with them and for the price it might be worth taking a chance. Also, Im looking at going to a junk yard and seeing if they have any projectors from the 1999.5-2001.5 a4's and then getting an adaptor for the bulb but im not sure how the fit would be.

Well if it hasn't been done already you need to do it RIGHT AWAY very imperative. Headlights, you could find a seller that has some good reviews on his items but for the most part don't go cheap you bought an audi you get what you pay for ya know? As far as the projectors from the junk yard im not to sure about that

Uhhhh....so your uncle, who happens to be a mechanic, is offering to sell you a sweet *** car for a good price? And your question is?

Haha just kidding man, but yea you definitely gotta go for it. If tb hasn't been done, your uncle being a mechanic makes it much easier....

haha yea, I was just checking because Ive seen some for cheaper on craigslist but in general they have over 100,000 miles and are a year or two older which matters for the v6.
for now I have one more question. I understand everything about grinding down the fender for a one piece headlight but if i was to get factory headlights from a newer model, those require d2s bulbs. would I be able to just pick up a d2s hid kit from ebay, plug the ballasts into the car and the light into the headlight assembly or would I need an adaptor to go from the car to the ballast? basically, is the connector from the ballast to the car universal or is it specific to the bulb?
thanks again
