Hey I am a new audi owner and just purchased a 1999 A4 2.8 Quattro have driven the car about a thousand kms and now there is a clicking noise in first gear (manual transmission). Just started happening yesterday wondering what it could possibly be. The sound doesn't occur in 2-5 gears only in first.

I have this problem with my '01 and I believe its a fairly common issue. I'm searching the forums now with regard to it. I believe it is a chipped first gear assembly that requires HEAVY disassembly work to the transmission itself and or replacement of the trans. The first gear is part of the first/reverse gear assembly and in order to repair it, the labor is intensive to say the least.
