Default Check engine light

Hello I got the check engine light on this past sat. and it hasn't gone away since , what ever it is can't affect the driving everything looks ok and feels ok , this is a 96 B5 2.8 FWD ,is it suppose to be OBDII right? I went to the local AZ so they can check the problem and they found the hole by my left knee area but just the hole no port ,feel around with the finger and nothing , is that the right place ?? any other way to check for the code of what's wrong ?? Thanks

I think there is a OBD port alternatively near the rear cigarette lighter tray.
