Default CEL time to clear

Long story short - I got codes P0300 (multiple misfires), P0302 (misfire cyl 2), P0304 (misfire cyl 4) and bad misfiring all of a sudden yesterday. From searching, I found out I needed I to replace two coil packs and now the problem is fixed for sure.

Just wondering how long I can expect the CEL to stay on. I don't have a way to clear it and autozone wouldn't clear it cause it's against the law. If it's going to be a long time, I'll know I need to grab a code scanner. Thanks.

its true. i always go to autozone and they're always bitches about clearing codes. i believe it is o'reillys that wont scan codes anymore because there was a lawsuit against them for giving the codes and they're meanings, and the worker told the guy to replace the wrong part. i have found that other shops are a little better about it, especially if you go to some mom and pop place. if you know how to work a reader (its not difficult) make sure you park right in front of the store, in plain sight, and ask them if you can read the codes yourself. ive done it before. or, you could always pull the negative battery cable off and let it sit for a minute. the codes would clear then. the only thing is that usually you need to know your radio code after you pull the battery, but for some reason i have never had to do it after i pulled my negative lead.

again- it being illegal to clear codes is ridiculous and i would give whoever told me that at autozone (in front of all the customers in the store) an ear full to say the least. there are zero laws in the entire united states against clearing DTC's. period. its completely ridiculous to even think there would be.

next time just go up to the counter and ask to borrow their OBD2 scanner as redline said. sometime stores let me borrow it for nothing, sometimes they take your drivers license as collateral and you get it back when you return the scanner. its self explanatory to use, just plug it in and follow what the screen says.

i stand corrected, that is the dumbest law ive ever hear of. so you are supposed to never clear codes? just fix the problem and let the light turn itself off? what if it takes 100 miles to cache into history before the light turns off? what if you dont know if fixing something really fixes the problem? you are just supposed to wait and see if the light eventually goes off?

I think they dont want the average joe clearing codes at Autozone and turning around selling the car as a "no problems" car. I wouldn't want dealerships clearing codes all *****-nilly.
