Post Cel Code P0012 shine me some light plz!

hey guys my dads 01 a4 has a P0012 code.

We want to fix it so far i goggle and search but dint get a single solid answer as to what causes this only misleading information and a bunch of people guessing, but am sure some one here has done it and fix it before.

car is apart right now no valve cover just ready to start messing with it any one want to let me know where to start or what to look for.

thank you.

since you said valve cover and not covers can we assume you have the 1.8T? How old is the engine oil? Any sludge visible in the head or on the cams? Being a 2001, my first thought is a problem with the VVT

yes its the 1.8t the engine oil is still good not old and no there is 0 sludge visible in the head or the cams everything looks clean, the car shows no other codes other than the one mention, it never gave a code till now. Is the 01 the only version that began to have the vvt or does all the b5 models have vvt just a random question lol. O yea and the engine was build by my dad about 2 years ago had 0 miles so right now i think it might have 30k? since we dont really take it out far.

As I recall, 01 or 01.5 was the only year B5 with VVT. Could be the cam position sensor starting to go bad too.
