CEL back on - ideas before i get it scanned?
Since I live in wonderful CA where Autozone isn't allowed to do free CEL scans, I don't know when I'll be able to get codes. I was hoping some of you can give me ideas as to why my CEL came back on. I plan to check and possibly replace the old vacuum lines I didn't get to the last time I did the vacuum lines this weekend. But other than that, I don't know what else to check.
Here's what happened that might give some of the gurus a clue what it may be. I was at a stop light. The car was idling nicely then it sounded and felt like the AC compressor engaged for about 10 to 15 seconds. Right after that the CEL light came back on. The car sounded, felt, and ran normal after that and still did this AM.
TIA guys!

Where in CA are you located?
The purpose of having the car scanned is to use it as a diagnostic tool; without scanning the ECU we are kinda shooting in the dark.
Anyways, my guess would be a tear in a vacuum line or one of the other rubber components in the vacuum system has a tear.

Thanks, MetalMan. I'm in the SF Bay Area.
I called around and Pep Boys said they can perform a scan for free. I'll report back as soon as I have the codes. Don't know why Autozone won't do it anymore.

On many scanners there will also be a "Clear" button... it's very easy to press and also it's my understanding that this is illegal or something to that effect. So some stores won't scan at all to avoid liability issues.

Could have been as simple as a slight misfire. I would highly suggest picking up one of our V-checkers so you can scan your car anytime you need to.
