Car Won't Start :(
#21
Please tell me more of this problem. How does the central locking module prevent the starter from cranking? I'm starting to think I've got the same problem.
When the car refused to start yesterday, I had JUST put the wrong key in the ignition by accident. I put my wife's 2012 Beetle key in there and tried to turn it, but obviously it didn't work. Then I realized my error and put my own key in there, and that's when the car refused to start.
This morning, I tried disconnecting the battery for a few seconds. When I plugged it back in, lo and behold, the car started right up with the key! Guess I shoulda tried that yesterday...
This is also a solution I'm interested in. How does it work, exactly? Just put the key in the ignition, turn it to "on" and press the button to start the car?

Yeah you just turn the key to on and then push the button. I couldn't get the car started with the key regardless of what I tried. I guess at the shop it started numerous times with the key. I guess the old beast was just tired haha. The central locking mechanism is part of the starting circuit. I'm guessing it's probably due to the non-US models of this car having an immobilizer. I had a cold start issue not last winter but the winter before. Same thing would happen. I would turn the key and nothing. I'm hoping if that problem arises again, this push button will also alleviate that. I'm guessing there is just some short in the module or something.

looks like my woes may have been caused by an unmatched key fob. When I bought the car, it came with 2 keys. One of them was very worn (the one that had been in use for years), while the other looked almost new. I decided to primarily use the new-looking one, but I guess it had been out of use for too long. It would only allow me to start the car X number of times before locking me out. Rematching both key fobs seems to have worked, I guess time will tell.
