Default Car shifts but wont move

Hey all,

My gf's 2001 A4 2.8 q had a breakdown today. She was coming to a red light and down shifted and heard "clunk." When she tried to go forward she could shift into gear but the engine would simply rev. No movement period.

Sounds like a clutch issue? The clutch was strong and was replaced around 100k (car has 140k now). Timing belt was recently done.

Any insight? This blows

Thanks

Lou

lol dick.

OP, sounds like the clutch to me, but it could be a number of other things, especially with a relatively new clutch. I would take it to your mechanic.

Did she try all gears, or just first? Have you tried pushing the car to verify that it's actually in gear? If she bent a shift fork, it may feel like it's working, but it won't.

Muahahaha! I have nothing to add of importance to this thread, other than that made me laugh...

PM Mike Hood, he's pretty knowledgable about the whole clutch/ transmission thing. Mike-2ptzero is his handle.

Nick, only if I/we were ghey and we lived in vermont...

OP, could be clutch or trans related, but dont rule out a halfshaft that snapped or came loose. Bent shift fork is very unlikely. Where are you located?

Thanks for the replys. I climbed under the car and it turns out the axle I just bought backed itself off the rear hub. Sucks. Rockauto here I come.
