Car seems to be running too hot?
Hi Guys,
Just got a 1996 Audi A4 B5 and it seems to be running too hot, I've heard from forums and such that they should run dead in the middle of the temp gauge (90c celcius) Is this correct? Because mine runs exactly there, but smells way too hot, and steam comes from the engine bay when I stop.
Within about one minute of driving it up to the middle of the temp gauge, however it will not go over that (it doesn't overheat) however when I stop the car and get out, it smells warm, and sometimes emits steam from the grille.
The old owner is running only WATER, so I plan of flushing the coolant system complete this weekend and running a 50/50 ratio of G12+ through it and seeing if that changes anything.
Anyone else have any suggestions? Try the termostat maybe? Or even the temp sensor? It appears it's actually much hotter then the temp is telling me.
I also have a minor issue, when I stick some boot in, it will kick the auto back to 1st gear, and will rev out to 5k and not change gears unless I really back off the accelerator (to around 50%). If i put my foot down any more than 50% it will kick back to first, rev to 5k, and not change to second until I let off. It ONLY does this when it's running at 90c however, when it's running cold it seems to run fine, have much more power, and change gears perfectly, so it seems it's attached to this overheating issue.
If anybody has any suggestions that'd be great, thankyou.

If you have steam coming out anywhere you have a leak somewhere in the system, since you say it comes out the grille it sounds like the radiator. Find the leak, do not use any of that radiator stop leak crap you will just end up with way more issues than you have now.
