buying advice on high mileage b5 2.8
Good day
I once had a 1999 a4 1.8t and it was a fun time. Not sure exactly sure why but I find myself very interested in a 1999 A4 quattro 2.8 with 225K miles for $1700, which appears overpriced.
The car is a single owner car with all the service records.
Good:
-Interior is in good shape except for ripped leather on drivers seat
-sunroof actually works
-Drives very smoothly
-Owner changed oil every 5K without fail
-Front axles changed @ 218K
-Timing belt, water pump, drive belt all changed at 213K in Apr 17
-Front brakes at 189K
-timing belt, crankshaft and cam seals, water pump and cam sensor at 182K in July 2011
-Clutch and right cat done at 171K in Oct 2010
-Coolant reservoir and cam plug at 160K in Apr 09
-Valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals, timing chain gaskets in 2008 at 150K
-ABS control unit at 122K
- I can add more but not sure what else is key
Bad:
-Car has nasty smell of burning oil at first and then clears up. Owner says he checks oil first of every month and usually adds 1/2-3/4 qt. I'm guessing valve cover gaskets
-Car AC works intermittently and best on highways. I'm guessing auxiliary fan
-Don't see fluid changes except for brake fluid at 140K and rear diff at 85K
-Last repair shop slip said clutch was worn but seemed to shift fine to me.
My questions overall are:
1. Am I walking into a money pit of high mileage maintenace especially with the suspected issues? Am i better off saving my $$. I'm able to do basic car maintenance, not sure about advanced work.
2. Is there anything else I should be looking for with the car?
Thanks
