Default bolt snapped, any clue how to remove it?

*****, so I asked my cousin if he could finish the job (thermostat replacement) while I'm at work today. He just called me, the guy over tightened the bolts and one snapped off. Looks like I have to do a water pump job now since there is a bolt stuck inside it

Anyone have any clues on removing a bolt that's stuck before I tear down the engine to do a waterpump/timing belt replacement?

Drill & tap unless you have left handed drill bits.

please explain. I'm not sure what either of those mean. I will also google.

So grab a smaller drill bit and drill backwards? Those things are already pretty small so I hope this works

Try Pep-Boys for a similar bolt. Just go to the bolt bins. E-Z Outs: Easy Out USA | Screw Extractors | Left Hand Extractor | Buy Easy Out | Desco Easy Out

If you are drilling a steel bolt in a aluminum head or block or even a cast iron block for that matter , you might want someone with experience doing the job. It will not be difficult to make a bigger mess out of this situation by not having the drill centered all the way through the bolt.

This is not a task for the inexperienced!

Well that's good. Try ecstuning. If you have enough of the bolt to get the thread and size, lowes carries a good bit of metric bolts that should work.

Glad to hear it is out! Must have been enough sticking out to get vice grips on it.
My bad , did not read every post to see the problem was resolved.

as far as the bolt , any hardware store , it should be a 6mm x 20mm long. Bring the other bolt to match it up.
